ArcGIS Explorer 500
ArcGIS Explorer 500 became available on August 20, 2008.
This release supplements ArcGIS Explorer 480 with support for subscription services, such as Microsoft Virtual Earth Maps. Learn about these services
ArcGIS Explorer now supports connections to enterprise geodatabases and GeoRSS feeds and allows you to import GPX format data. ArcGIS Explorer's default maps and layers have been updated, including enhanced topographic map services and updated streets, boundaries, and places. ArcGIS Explorer also offers improved KML/KMZ support.
Several new tasks have been added to ArcGIS Explorer including Find Telephone, Find Computer Location, Add Photo, and Find Features. See a demo of adding photos.
ArcGIS Explorer now offers direct e-mail capabilities, allowing users to easily share their maps, layers, and results with others. See a demo of direct e-mail capabilities.
ArcGIS Explorer offers more ways to control user interface elements such as auto-zoom to results and automatic display of saved or e-mailed pop-up windows. Also, ArcGIS Explorer can now be embedded in a Web page.
ArcGIS Explorer 480 adds support for graticules and reference grids (USNG, MGRS). It also now offers the ability to set raster background transparency, new options for point symbols and symbol size, improved pop-up window capabilities, and easier access to feature attributes.
New tasks, layers, and results are also available from the updated ArcGIS Explorer Resource Center. For example, you can download the Add Photo task directly from the Resource Center to add geotagged photos to ArcGIS Explorer.
This release closely follows the release of ArcGIS Explorer 440 and fixes issues related to using certain graphics cards and drivers. It also offers improved cache error handling.
The default ArcGIS Explorer map features a new ArcGIS Online globe service offering 500 m and 15 m resolution satellite imagery of the world, with 1 m resolution aerial imagery for the contiguous United States.
The Navigator is now located directly on the map display and has been streamlined.
ArcGIS Explorer now provides basic printing capabilities.
The File Import Wizard allows you to display x,y coordinates and addresses from delimited text files (.txt or .csv) as results in your map. You can also automatically populate the results pop-up windows with information from the text file including HTML links to Internet sites.
The Find Place task has a new interface with improved search capabilities.
When adding a WMS service you can choose individual or multiple sublayers instead of the entire collection in the group layer, making WMS services more manageable.
A new KML contents window is accessible by right-clicking any KML layer in the Contents window. If you click on a sub layer with a description, a KML pop-up window displays the available information about the specific layer.
ArcGIS Explorer now automatically detects and inherits your proxy server settings, making it easier and faster to connect via your existing server LAN settings.
The New Map File (NMF) file format now has the option to include user credentials when saving a map, making accessing secure services and maps easier without compromising security.
Allow keyboard navigation while using track line or track polygon in the measure and create notes tasks.
Vertical altitude (elevator) navigation has been added.
Provide new unit options for the Position Status bar: Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) and U.S. National Grid (USNG).
Provide improved functionality for Go To Location: Support for MGRS, USNG, and decimal degrees, as well as the ability to create results for the location.
Clouds, stars, and atmospheric halo are properties of each map and are stored in .nmf rather than as properties of the application.
Set Home Server restarts ArcGIS Explorer automatically.
