More municipalities are creating enterprise GIS departments; therefore, the level of interest in combining GIS data with other systems, such as SAP's enterprise resource planning and Information Builders' business intelligence, is getting stronger. Washoe County, Nevada, Integrates Voting System with GIS and Microsoft SQL Server
Like other information outlets, the 2006 Washoe County Live Election Mapping Web site monitored vote counts, but it also used GIS to give viewers the additional component of real-time updated maps at the voter precinct level. Viewers of the Live Election Mapping Web site were able to monitor dynamic maps as the results were counted. The mapping application uses the election results data in SQL Server to create maps based on voter precincts stored as an ArcSDE layer.

ESRI Expands Its International Distributor Network with the Opening of ESRI Eastern Africa
ESRI announces a new distributorship for its GIS software in Africa with the opening of ESRI Eastern Africa Ltd. (ESRI EA). This expansion is in response to the evolving needs of the GIS market in the region. ESRI EA will provide software sales, support, and service to users in Kenya, Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

ESRI's Mapping Center Web Site Helps GIS Users Make Better Maps
ESRI recently announced the launching of Mapping Center , a new Web site that helps users learn about cartographic concepts and best practices for mapmaking with ArcGIS. The site is designed to provide quick answers to mapmaking problems. Site visitors will find information and sample maps displaying a wide variety of cartographic techniques and effects along with tips and instructions on how to reproduce the featured effects on their own maps.

ESRI Data and ArcGIS 9.2 Tools Accurately Portray Neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas
In cooperation with a business reporter at the Dallas Morning News, ESRI produced information for a feature article in a recent edition that described the types of people who live, work, and consume products and services in the six-county area around Dallas, Texas. In addition to the current composition of these neighborhoods, the data was also used to predict demographic changes such as population growth, the aging of the area population, and changes in neighborhood diversity that are likely to occur in the next five years.

Access Premium Satellite Imagery through ArcGIS Online
You can now use ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Explorer to connect to ArcGIS Online via the Web and freely access the premium satellite imagery service. This service provides seamless, high-resolution imagery at approximately 1-meter resolution for the contiguous United States and 500- and 15-meter resolution for the world. The premium imagery is available at no cost as part of the public ArcGIS Online beta program. Read the article .

GIS Preserves Family Ties
Khatib & Alami, ESRI's distributor in Beirut, Lebanon, demonstrates an unusual implementation of GIS: generating a family tree. One of the main drawbacks of a typical hard-copy family tree is the density of information and the inflexibility of updating and adding members. The ArcGIS advanced editing capabilities, with the possibility of selecting, moving, adding, copying, and pasting, made data updating a flexible and enjoyable task.

Public Utilities Commission Integrates GIS into New Employee Orientation
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission recently began introducing a GIS module in its three-day mandatory new employee orientation. The training provides an overview of the enterprise GIS program with an introduction to the Web-based GIS Basemap Viewer application. This new GIS segment allows 300 employees annually to become familiar with the program.
