Near Tool Now Handles Multiple Feature Types
For ArcInfo users, the Near tool in ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 provides additional proximity analysis. More feature types can be used for this analysis and additional results are generated and saved as output.

Scientists at the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) in Massachusetts are tracking carbon footprints across the globe, starting with U.S. forests. In one study, they are using GIS to measure the carbon-rich biomass in heavily wooded areas to indicate the effect deforestation and land use have on rising carbon levels in our atmosphere.
