In the early 1970s, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) established the Air Installations Compatible Use Zones (AICUZ) Program to balance the need for aircraft operations and community concerns. The goal of the AICUZ Program is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of those living near a military airport while preserving its defense flying mission. Under the AICUZ Program, DoD provides noise zones and Accident Potential Zones (APZs) as planning tools for location planning agencies and recommends compatible development near military air facilities. Ecology and Environment, Inc., designed this map for public distribution to clearly show the noise zone levels and APZs affecting neighborhoods surrounding three naval air stations in Virginia. |
