The Student Edition one-year time-out software uses the same Install Guide[PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] as the Evaluation software, but limitation and term of use are modified to those for the Student Edition (see limits and term below).
Once you have registered the software, you have 365 calendar days to use ArcView 9.1 and the Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions.
Yes. You need to register ArcView 9.1 and the Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions you wish to use with ESRI before you can begin using any of them. You can register via the Internet, ESRI Web site, e-mail, fax, or mail. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide[PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.
Please note that the registration process will not accept acronyms in the Company Name field. If you use an abbreviation for your university name in the Company Name field, you may receive a message stating: "This code is not valid for registration at this time." If you have already received this message, please contact ESRI Customer Service, at 888-377-4575.
This message can be the result of an abbreviation used in the Company Name field. If you enter your university name in the Company Name field, please do not abbreviate the name. If you have already received this message, please contact ESRI Customer Service, 1-888-377-4575.
The registration number is the 12-digit code located on the CD case. When you are ready to register, you will provide ESRI with that registration number, and we will in turn give you an authorization file so that you can activate ArcView 9.1 and the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions. If you register via the Internet, this process happens automatically.
The 365-day evaluation begins once you have initiated the registration process and ESRI issues an authorization file. If you have installed the software but have not yet registered it, your evaluation time has not begun.
Use the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator. From the Start menu, select Programs, select ArcGIS, and click Desktop Administrator. Click on the Availability folder.
If you install a full version of ArcView 9.1, you must uninstall the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1 and the ArcGIS extensions, then install the full version of ArcView 9.1. The registration number for the full version of ArcView 9.1 will not work with the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1.
Use the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows Control Panel. From the Start menu, click Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select "ArcView 9.1 (Demo Edition)" from the program list. If you are using Windows NT, click the Add/Remove button. This will uninstall ArcView 9.1.
The install guide installed with the software refers to the full version of ArcView 9.1. The full version of ArcView 9.1 provides three CDs. The Student Edition includes two CDsone with the software media and one that includes the ESRI Software Documentation Library. The Quick Start Data and Tutorial CD and the Data and Maps CDs are not included with the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1. The evaluation install guide is referenced because it contains useful troubleshooting information that is also applicable to the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1. This FAQ can be used for Student Edition-specific questions. The Install Guide on bottom left is for the full version of ArcView 9.1. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide[PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for information regarding the software on this CD.
When you install ArcView 9.1, you are installing the ArcGIS Desktop applications ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcGIS is the name that appears in the Start program menu, not ArcView.
ArcView 9.1 consists of two desktop applications: ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcMap provides data display, query, and analysis. ArcCatalog provides data management. When you want to begin using ArcView, you need to open each application.
ArcReader is a free, downloadable, easy-to-use product that allows anyone to view, explore, and print published map files (PMFs). ArcGIS Publisher is an extension to ArcView that converts map documents (MXD) to published map files (PMF). For more information on ArcReader, visit www.esri.com/arcreader.
Yes. The ArcGIS extensions work with ArcView 9.1. They are called the ArcGIS extensions since they work with ArcView 9.1, ArcEditor 9.1, and ArcInfo 9.1, collectively known as ArcGIS Desktop. The Student Edition includes the right to use Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions (subject to limitations and term of use).
While ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS Network Analyst, ArcGIS
3D Analyst, ArcGIS Schematics, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, ArcGIS Data Interoperability, ArcGIS Publisher, ArcGIS Survey Analyst, ArcScan for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Tracking Analyst, and Maplex for ArcGIS are all included, the Student Edition includes the limited right to use ArcGIS ArcView, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions for 365 calendar days.
The 365-day evaluation begins once you have installed and completed the registration process for the ArcGIS extensions. If you are registering by e-mail, fax, or mail, the evaluation period begins when you initially contact ESRI. If you have installed the software but have not yet registered the extensions, your evaluation time has not begun. Even if you have registered ArcView 9.1, the 365-day extension evaluation period has not begun until you register each extension. You can install and register the extensions separately from ArcView 9.1. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide[PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.
When using the Student Edition software with the ArcGIS extensions, you are not required to enter the registration numbers. During the registration process at the Evaluate the ArcGIS extensions panel, check the boxes next to the Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions. The registration wizard will recognize the same registration number you used for registering ArcView 9.1. The 12-digit registration number is located on the back of the CD case. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide[PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.
If you did not choose to install the ArcGIS extensions during the initial installation of ArcView 9.1, they can be added later. We recommend that you install and register the ArcGIS extensions at the same time as ArcView 9.1. Your 365-day use of the ArcGIS extensions only begins when you register the software and not when you install the software. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide[PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.
No. The Tutorials and Data CDs are not included with the Student Edition. Contact your faculty advisor for help with tech support, installation, data, and learning to use ArcView and extensions.
The Student Edition of ArcView 9.1 and the full version of ArcView 9.1 support Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. For more information, visit www.esri.com/arcview.
ESRI does not support ArcView 9.1 on Windows NT 4.0 with service packs earlier than 6a. The installer will provide a warning but will allow installation. Our limited experience shows that many people with earlier service packs will not have a problem.
The minimum requirements are a Pentium computer with an 800 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, and approximately 700 MB of free disk space. The recommended requirements are a Pentium computer with a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and approximately 700 MB of free disk space.
Please note: Disk space does not include the 50 MB of system drive space needed for installation (typically C:\WINNT\system32). The disk space requirement for each of the ArcView 9.1 components is provided in the setup program.
ESRI supports the use of the Student Edition software through resources at the ESRI Web site. Visit www.esri.com/evalhelp for more information; contact your faculty advisor who provided you with this software.
