The Earth Charter

A System for Survival: GIS and Sustainable Development

The Earth Charter Commission was formed by the United Nations to oversee a project dedicated to establishing fundamental principals for sustainable development. GIS technology has long played a key role in assisting organizations throughout the world to work together to meet the goals set forth in the charter.

Collecting and interpreting large volumes of data, impact assessments from human development, and disaster recovery efforts are examples of how GIS supports sustainable development on multiple levels.
