Volume 23: GISGeography in Action
Reach the Summit: Mount Hood, OregonMount Hood, a stratovolcano in northern Oregon, is approximately 50 miles southeast of Portland. Belonging to the Cascade Range, Mount Hood is the highest peak in the state and home to 12 glaciers.
Volume 22: GISThe Geographic Approach

Volume 21: GISCommunicating Our World
2004 Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne Track and Wind SpeedThe 2004 Atlantic hurricane season deeply affected the state of Florida. Four major hurricanes hit Florida within one and one-half months. This map shows the tracks, timing, wind speeds, and general areas affected by hurricane and tropical storm force winds of the three hurricanes that hit the southern part of the state.
Volume 20: GISHelping Manage Our World
Crisis GISPreparing for the Next Volcanic Eruption in the United StatesA well-designed and constructed GIS of U.S. volcano information will be invaluable during a crisis when timely analysis and communication of volcanic hazards are most critical. An effective crisis GIS system will be vital to the Volcano Hazards Program (VHP) of the U.S. Geological Survey for visualizing and analyzing the situation and communicating with emergency managers, the media, and the public during the next volcanic crisis.
Volume 19: GISThe Language of Geography
First Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster Media MapOn February 1, 2003, at approximately 8 a.m. CT the Space Shuttle Columbia was lost upon reentry over east Texas. Within a few minutes of the spacecraft breaking up and explosions over Nacogdoches, GIS was put to work aiding local law enforcement in protecting public safety. Within a few hours of the destruction of Columbia, GIS accurately modeled the shuttle's debris location and distribution. This was the first media map produced for the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy. It was produced in mass and distributed to the media on the afternoon of February 2.
Old Fire, November 1, 2003In October 2003, fires raged throughout Southern California in San Diego, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Ventura, and Riverside counties. As emergency responders worked to put out the fires with every resource available, computer mapping played a key role in many areas, including emergency response, public safety, and the media.
Published annually, each volume of the ESRI Map Book showcases a small portion of the work presented at the Map Gallery exhibition at the annual ESRI International User Conference.
