Collections and Research
Locality is an important part of a collections database, adding clues about the environment in which an object originated and a means for identifying other objects from the same place but a different point in time. GIS complements existing collections management systems, providing both geo-referencing tools for determining locality, and spatial analysis tools for using that locality data in research and interpretation. Scientists in fields from archaeology to zoology use GIS for mapping distributions of plants and animals, visualizing statistical data such as ozone concentrations or sea surface temperatures, predicting where archaeological sites might be found, and monitoring geologic events such as earthquakes and volcanoes.
