ArcLogistics 9.3
The high cost of fuel means that school districts with internal distribution to manage may benefit from the new ArcLogistics 9.3. Besides its new name (previously ArcLogistics Route 3), this fleet management product offers greater functionality and is simpler to use. Read the white paper [PDF] about what's new, or take the free online training seminar.

U.S. Presidential Election

U.S. Presidential Election
Interested in the 2008 U.S. presidential election? Your students can explore it with either ArcExplorer - Java Edition for Education or ArcView 9.3. The EdCommunity Blog contains a link from which you can download a dataset, ArcExplorer - Java Edition for Education and ArcView 9.3 projects, and lessons with which to explore geographic aspects of the 2008 presidential election. The file also includes a PDF export so that users of Adobe Reader 9 can see the individual layers and attributes.

ArcGIS Online
Ever long for easy-to-add data that you can just drop into an ArcMap session? ArcGIS Online is just that! A collection of online basemaps, imagery, and overlays, including both free services and premium subscription (high-resolution imagery) content, is at your fingertips. ArcGIS Online standard services are available free to ArcGIS users for internal use or for noncommercial external use (see licensing summary). For ArcGIS Desktop users, there are .mxd files (ArcMap projects), .lyr files (layer files), and .3dd files (ArcGlobe projects). ArcGIS Explorer users can access different .nmf files as projects, layers, tasks, and results.

Support News

ArcGIS Explorer Blog: Mini-Lessons
ArcGIS Explorer, ESRI's free, downloadable, 3D geographic data browser, is supported by a rich array of blog entries at the ArcGIS Explorer Resource Center and the GIS Education Community portal. Some tell geographic stories and some show special data or functionality, but all are the equivalent of mini-lessons. Recent entries at the ArcGIS Explorer Resource Center blog have an earth science focus such as the series on Hurricane Ike and the entry on climate change at Glacier National Park. At the EdCommunity blog, multipart entries cover topics such as teaching about watersheds and earthquake mapping. Use the metatags at both sites to discover content and combine ideas into a learning sequence.

Resource Centers
One of the great new elements of ArcGIS 9.3 is the ready access to resource centers. The resource centers help you use the tools better by providing quick access to online instruction, content, customizations, Web help, and support. The ArcGIS Desktop Resource Center can be accessed from the File menu of ArcMap 9.3 or the help menus of ArcCatalog 9.3 and ArcMap 9.3.

Youth at 2008 ESRI User Conference: The Power of One
See how one GIS-using educator and one young girl have affected a community through maps. Speaking before an audience of thousands attending the 2008 ESRI User Conference Plenary Session, educator Bob Coulter introduced Molly Paterson, a recent graduate of sixth grade from a school in University City, Missouri. Using ArcView 9.3 - live, on the fly - Molly calmly showed her demographic analysis of her community. (And hear how she responded to ESRI president Jack Dangermond at the end!) Hear the podcast [MP3].
